Phoenix (Ph)iasco

Wickenburg, Az. To Mesa, Az. 74 miles 5hours 27 minutes, 13.5 average. Total 392 miles.

There's a lot of pressure writing these blogs now. Mary Ashley Callaway (our fourth child) said "it's like her heroin" she's addicted. Hal Craig former Twick youth member in the glory days said "I wait all day for the next
update, I almost turned the Boise St. Game off to check the blog." Come on Hal, get a life. I wish I had more to offer you. It's a toss up between today's 74 and yesterdays 116. We did 30 miles into Phoenix from Wickenburg at a ripping 16 mph. Then all momentum was lost as we struggled to find our way through a myriad of stoplights and questionable turns. My maps are built for bikes, Amy on the iPad is working from the car point of view. Very frustrating. Before it was over we were both frustrated with each other. But we checked into a motel, had dinner, and are fine now, except she's leaving Friday. That's not good. However, Brad Bass and Ben Logan are coming, can you believe that? Then Jamie Kimbel is coming. I'm blown away by the support. I may even get to see my old college buddy Jeff Wyatt. Anyway, today was pretty uneventful. Pray for Kolton, Kooper, and Kody, they need a parent.

Lincoln

Here's Amy
Nothing, I got nothing! It was a day filled with many stops and a lot of turning around. And, there were NO picture opportunities! How boring! Lincoln did great - but as he mentioned before, navigating from two different perspectives is difficult. I'll take middle of nowhere, bad roads and no shoulder over populated, center of Phoenix roads any day! Lincoln is sporting some interesting tan lines though - sunburned arms, white hands and strap marks down the chin! Pretty - but the mark of a dedicated rider! We are growing slightly concerned over Lincoln's dead hand. It seems the intense riding is taking it's toll on his right hand - he can't hold anything! I had to help him with shaving and almost had to feed him tonight! Very interesting! But, all is well - just very tired! While Wickenburg was a quaint little town - they had terrible pillows! We're hoping for a better nights sleep! Be blessed! Amy

  1. Isn't it amazing how the blessings of friends and families overflow when you least expect it? God truly blesses us all! Keep being amazed. :)
    love you both!!

  2. Linc, When you get to feeling a little more positive about "life on the road", I have some sarcastic prognosis for the weak-hand/limp-wrist syndrone you're experiencing --- but I'll save it. I've also heard that most cyclists started out playing soccer as kids. And see Amy, it's not just my driving that he criticizes. Pedal on my friend - bird country is straight ahead (almost).

  3. Big Daddy! I just sat down tonight and caught up on your postings that I have missed the last few days. As I read your post from today about struggling through the myriad of stoplights and questionable turns, it struck me that that is a good metaphor for the struggles we all share - stoplights (detours, dead ends, missed opportunites, etc.) and questionable turns.

Even though you didn't plan this ride to inspire others, it has in many ways! You're in my prayers. Keep pedaling. I'll consult some of the old Appalachian folklore books I have and see if I can figure out how to make you a poltice for your hand!

  4. Linc and Amy...To ease your concerns the boys are doing fine...since you've been gone, Kody has learned to clip his own fingernails (although he still thinks you're far better at it), Kooper has eaten his body weight in Chinese Food (or "China food" as Kody called it in his recent post), and Kolton figured out how to get his friends to do his math homework...via TEXT...now that's impressive!!! Know you're loved!

  5. Well, like Mary Ashley, Lee and I too follow your every mile. We are like "have you heard from Lincoln?" I wonder where he is? You are loved. This is so inspiring. Your quite the blogger, when this is done.... Write a book-I could see this in book format-your bike ride is a great metaphor for the Christian Life/Walk.

  6. Linc - One map down! Congrats! Keep crankin'! I work with several cycling enthusiasts and we gather around to read your updates every morning. You are making GREAT progress! My fingers go numb on my long rides, too. Try raising your handlebars a little or tilting the front of your saddle up a bit to make sure you are putting more weight in the saddle than on your handlebars. Helped me a bit.

Amy - I completely understand how confusing managing the two maps can be! Google maps does have a bike route feature so you might wanna give that a shot if you haven't already. I'm so glad you can be there to support him.

    Take care!

  7. Wow! You've really traveled some major miles! I'm so proud of you! I, too, check your blog everyday (usually 2 times a day to catch up on the great comments) and I've really enjoyed keeping up with you and Amy. Linc, it really is inspiring to hear about your adventures and the hardships you've overcome and the fact that you are still going. I'm so thankful to be a part of a church family that can encourage both people facing illness they did not ask for, as well as people facing challenges they did ask for! Praise God! I love y'all. Keep it up!

  8. Add me to the long list of "addicts". It's kinda like I'm right there with you (without the heat, exhaustion, cramps, "dead hand", and bad pillows).
BTW- while you are living your Southern Tier adventure, the praise team is having a few "adventures" of our own! :) It'll be fun catching up.
    Be ye strong and courageous!

  9. I too am an addict! We prayed for you in the ladies bible class last night. We were talking about "The Living Water" and how water is so important to our bodies, and I couldn't help but think of you! Thanks for letting us all live vicariously through you! And your kids have a whole church full of "parents"!

  10. The boys are great and we are looking forward to Amy coming home. The boys are excited to see her. Kooper played great in the game yesterday and we enjoyed having Bev and Ed stay the night. We are busier then you are! Keep pedaling and know we are praying for you and keeping your boys cleaned and fed.

  11. Add us to your long list of caring family members who are waiting expectantly for your adventures. For what it is worth, I think you have the worst part. You have to be in good shape to cross the first day of steep climb and deadly heat.
We are enjoying the journey with you. There are still more mountains and a lot of miles between the changes of scenery. Take care, we love you.

  12. Lincoln--hopefully you will ride in memory of mom today as it is her birthday. It's hard to believe so much time has passed since we celebrated with her. Kristen

  13. Linc,
I was awakened at 5:30 a.m. today and immediately began praying for you and your journey! It's funny how God puts people in our hearts when it's still dark outside! You mean a lot to our family. We wish you Godspeed as you travel!

  14. You are in our prayers every morning and every night we look at the atlas to see where you have ridden to that day. We love you!

  15. Me too, or is it twelve by now? I appreciate you letting us in on this journey with you. I had hoped you would be coming a little further north near Oklahoma so I could line all my friends up on the road to cheer you on. Hang in there and hang on - you're doing great from where I sit!
    Love you both - Jill

  16. Lincoln,
Do they have GPSs for bikes? If they did you could enter flattest route and shortest route. We miss your song service at church, but Brad is doing a good job standing in. We too are praying for you every night, and enjoy reading your blogs. Keep up the good work.

  17. Just made my life to have a shout out from my "heroin"!!!!!!!!!!!! I am in awe of your ability to keep pushing through those uphill stretches that keep happening one right after the other! I think that it is truly amazing how even in the roughest parts that God always provides....even in funny ways like goats swimming in a hotel pool just to provide a laugh! I am praying for you always and know that God is with you with every mile! You are an inspiration to me in waaaaay to many ways to list here! Keep pedaling!!
