Rainy Days and Wednesdays Always Get Me Down.

Day 19 New Braunfels, Tx. To Bastrop, Tx. 62 miles, 4 hrs. 29 min. Avg. Spd. 13.8 mph, Total miles 1564.

It's a lot harder to get going in the morning with 5 people than it is with 1.
We finally departed Suzanne's house sadly at 8:00 AM. We then had todrive 45 minutes to New Braunfels where it had rained recently and the roads were soaked. In addition, I made some bad road selections and found myself in some tight spots.
I also had a new experience today. After all the miles I've covered I finally got cussed, I mean I got cussed good. On some lonely country road in the middle of nowhere somebody stopped and informed me, in no uncertain terms that I was all that was wrong with cycling, in fact I was all that was wrong with the whole world. He cussed me so bad it kind of got funny to me, which made him cuss harder. I told him that I hoped he had a great day and he drove off like I had offended him.
We had to stop for rain on several occasions and had trouble finding lunch. The first place Amy found was closed on Wednesdays. We then started seeing signs for a Chevron with a BBQ place in it. We found it but they only have the gas station in so far. Lunch was peanut butter and crackers.
Once again I'm indebted to Roger Harwell. In any kind of wet scenarios you would be soaked without fenders. With fenders it's very tolerable. Thanks Roger.
We finally put the bike up about 2:00 PM because it came another
soaker. We then headed back to Austin to the Springhill Suites, Courtesy of Clark Edgin (Amy's brother, thanks Clark).
I got a call from an old college buddy (Steve Vierra) last night. He had talked to another college buddy (Jeff Wyatt) and found out that I was in the area. We had dinner with Steve and his wife Annette, and their daughter tonight. Once again I'm amazed at how God is giving me insight into my life through these experiences and the relationships with people new and old.

It's been a great day to be together as family. I'm amazed that my kids are just as irritating as they were before I left. They said the same thing about me.

Is my wife awesome or what? First she flies to California to save my life, then she listen's to my crying everyday, then she drives 14 hrs to see me the same week that she's supposed run a half marathon. Talk about heroes and angels, I LOVE MY WIFE!

Tomorrow, I rest. This rest was not my choosing, but imposed by my wife.
We're going to check out the UT campus. Darren, Owen, that's the real UT, where they play football and everything.

Brace yourselves people, I'm not blogging tomorrow. I know some of you will probably need to chew a piece of nicorette or something, but I promise, you'll survive. I'll be back to blogging on Friday and then you should have a couple more weeks before you have to find a new show.

Today's pics:

The steady steed awaiting transport.

The whole crew. They tried to stand in front of the steed. I said no.

Homework.

The appearance of homework.

How did they get excused from school anyway? Hmmmmmmm, can you say Sheri Crigger?

Lovely weather for a ride.

I'm way back there on the left.

Uhhhhhhh, where did the shoulder go?

One lane river bridge.

River.

One lane river bridge crossing.

The steed at home on the old San Antonio road.

Kolton taking picture through window of rearview mirror. With gummy bear stuck on it. If only he applied himself on homework that well.

Ok, I'm confused. Is that like inflight driving lessons on the ground?

Lunch! No.

Lunch! No.

More showers.

What a support crew. Jeff Gordon eat your heart out.

  1. This post has been up for four hours and no comments yet? Maybe everyone's taking a day off since you are, too. Go figure.

The phrase "I owe you one" now takes on a whole new meaning. One what? I'm kinda thinking that the unit of measure has not been invented yet that describes the magnitude of the bigness of what you're gonna owe your wife when this is all said and done. At the very least, call Merriam-Webster. Send 'em her picture. Tell them to include it in the entry for "awesome" in the next edition.

Have fun with the fam on your cycling sabbath. Hope you have favorable winds and dry weather when you saddle up again.

    Cheers,
    Scott

p.s. - After seeing the knock-off, the boys should get to see the Original UT: prettier orange and a mascot that's *not* what's for dinner. ;-)

  2. Glad you are finally taking a rest day. However, go for a short easy spin to keep the legs loose. I've heard nightmares about taking a rest day and the first day after the break is tough. Pedal, push and pray.

  3. Next to a leisurely walk I enjoy a spin on my tandem bicycle. It is splendid to feel the wind blowing in my face and the springy motion of my iron steed. The rapid rush through the air gives me a delicious sense of strength and buoyancy, and the exercise makes my pulse dance and my heart sing. ~ Helen Keller

Enjoy your day off of the "iron steed". Have fun with your family!!

  4. I'm impressed with your cycling prowess but I question your overall judgement - I mean who in their right mind would actually burn their orange? Listen to Scott and make sure your boys experience the REAL UT that was at University status before Texas was even a state.

  5. Lincoln & Amy,

I have made the wrong turn in Meridian, MS at the the I-59 and I-20 split several times when I went to school in Jackson. It is so easy b/c you come out of Meridian and over a hill, and then there is nothing but Pinetrees and asphalt. But you are right...it is quicker to go to South Texas by taking I-10...Great to see you have passed the halfway point. You all enjoy your time together today and be safe as you start back tomorrow. RIDE ON!!!!

  10. "After all the miles I've covered I finally got cussed, I mean I got cussed good."

Did he say "Go up, you baldhead!"? If so, time to call in the she-bears. It's okay, it's in the Bible.
